Mike + Ruthy at Eagle Hill, Hardwick MA

The Center at Eagle Hill, Hardwick MA

VENUE

The Center at Eagle Hill theater is five years young and a warm, comfortable environment for fans. The town of Hardwick is located mid-State west along the Ware River in the vicinity of the Quabbin Reservoir.  Hardwick is a classic New England village that harkens back to the Robert Frost poem, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” Driving along passed the rustic meadows and forests, deep in the heart of the independent spirit of the Minutemen of old it is as scenic a venue for folk artistry  that could be conjured. The people of Hardwick have a typically hearty character similar to the miles of field stone walls leading to the center. A moss-covered weathered patina of old Yankee who’s respect must be earned. There is no mortar required, only a foundation strong, self-supporting and here forever. As an area resident, with ease I can boast of the Hardwick Winery, local cheeses and fresh meats, Rose 32 Café and the best Sunday farmer’s market for miles.

PERFORMANCE

Mike + Ruthy have impressive roots in the folk music family with personal ties to one of the most influential performers of the genre. From their press release, “Mike + Ruthy have been friends and collaborators with the Guthrie family for many years… Their band The Mammals enjoyed a six month stint opening for and backing up Arlo Guthrie during his “40th Anniversary of Alice’s Restaurant” tour which culminated at New York’s Carnegie Hall.” For those unfamiliar with Arlo Guthrie, he is the son of the late Woody Guthrie who is the wellspring from which have been baptized Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp and many more. There are few artists more revered and identified with American folk music than Woody Guthrie.

Ruth Ungar’s voice is complex with a broad vocal range that is winsome, bluesy and capable of dramatic emotional shifts that reach the listener and creates tension in its sincerity. She is the daughter of Jay Ungar and Lyn Hardy. Jay Ungar is a premier fiddler and composer. Jay’s most identifiable work may be the Ashokan Farewell. The Ken Burns documentary, The Civil War, played this soulful air as the signature musical piece for the program.

Mike Merenda is a quiet, gentle tenor with an Arlo twang in his voice. He is a songwriter who draws inspiration from the reflection in the small moments of the day that build a memory of a life well spent. He is at first a superb musician with a tendency to add percussion in a foot stomp at just the right moment. Mike’s heart is in his eyes for Ruthy a subtle, emotional, gentle awareness.

Together, they represent the modern generation of American Acoustic Folk Music. They are excellent musicians playing fiddle, banjo, guitar and harmonica. Their songwriting is largely autobiographical drawing on things as they are. The audience was well pleased with the performance as evident of the brisk sales of CD’s and even LP’s of their material.

Mike + Ruthy keep up a banter between themselves and the audience throughout the performance. It was as if we are old friends they are sure to have met before and now becoming reacquainted by sharing stories of the road, parenthood and music. The encore brought their pride and joy, son Wiley, center stage. At five years old, he was able to find the tune once he got the harmonica to play and jumped right in to the song. I walked away with a sense of being well-entertained by serious artists. If this was dessert, we were served warm, deep dish apple pie with mascarpone cheese and hot cider. Well done to all!

Buon Natale: The Christmas Album

CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAY ITALIAN STYLE

We are fast approaching the Holiday season in New England and soon shoppers will be fanning out to find presents to share with friends and family. For the music aficionados on your list the latest CD from Il Volo, Buon Natale may be the perfect gift. This CD is part of a Christmas Special for television recorded earlier this year in Miami and soon to be released on most PBS stations. The group is managed by the Michele Torpedine. The instrumentals on the CD are produced by the team of Humberto Gatica and Tony Renis.

Il Volo, are comprised of Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble. The young singers hail from Italy and are presently wrapping up a lengthy concert tour that took them from Canada all the way to Argentina, delighting their vast audience of English and Spanish fans in the Americas. They appeared as special guest artist during Barbra Streisand’s tour Fall 2012. And, have sung at the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony in December of 2012.

Il Volo are unique in today’s music scene presenting the full-bodied harmonics of a romantic baritone, lyric and dramatic tenors. Their vocal range has taken them from classic Italian songs such as their signature, “O Sole Mio” to “Torna a Surriento/Surrender” demonstrating remarkable competence in such operatic standards as “Non Puede Ser” and “En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor”. Il Volo are notable in their presentation of pieces by Sinatra, Elvis and Elton John. They delight with the great songs of stage in “Maria” and “Memory”. Their natural vocal talents along with warm and endearing charisma make for a spectacular star on your Christmas Tree.

While new fans will be delighted with the classic Christmas play list, returning fans will appreciate the inclusions of “Ave Maria” sung in its native language, “White Christmas” and a sweet version of “Mis Deseos/Feliz Navidad” sung with Belinda the Spanish-born Mexican singer-songwriter and actress. Belinda’s sweet, gentle ultra-feminine performance is more pronounced beside the masculine presence of Il Volo. The artists demonstrate international versatility with songs in German, Spanish, English and their native Italian. From the sacred to the secular, there is something for everyone.

Fans in Italy can look forward to the scheduled performance at Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi in Perugia Italy this Holiday season. “Panis Angelicus” will take on a whole new meaning sung under such an auspicious crown. Bravi!

Il Volo Christmas Special – December 2013 Boston MA

December 2, 2013  Boston MA area fans enjoyed the appearance of Il Volo (IV) in the Bay State. The local PBS affiliate, WGBH Boston aired the Buon Natale: Christmas Special as part of the December fund drive for membership and support of the Public Broadcast Service.

Piero Barone tweeted out their departure to Boston and Gianluca their arrival. Local fans were caught by surprise to learn of a Meet and Greet event held at the Westin Hotel which may or may not have been a private function. Tickets were required to attend and the late publicity created a moment of confusion for area fans.

IV did appear in studio during the fund raising viewing of the Christmas Special at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 2. The Christmas Special was the third concert filmed exclusively for PBS and available for purchase in the USA. The hostess, Lo Hartnett, is an unabashed IV fan and was also the hostess during the fund raising viewing in June 2012 of Il Volo Concert from the Detroit Opera House. The camaraderie between “I raggazzi” and Lo helped foster a warm and relaxed interaction between herself and the viewing audience. Piero took the lead in conversation and displayed his bright, affectionate personality openly thanking God for IV and the swift road to success as recording and performance artists. Piero is notable for always wearing the cross at his neck resting just on his voice box, he may believe Grace sings through him with every note.

The Christmas Special is delightful and pure IV magic. Piero was brilliant in his cardinal red jacket. Gianluca suave and personable in style and voice. Ignazio balanced and poised singing his personal best. There is an A  Capella of Blue Christmas sung originally by Elvis Presley. This moment alone is worth the price of the DVD. Ave Maria also stands out with its plaintive cadenced melody akin to the resting state of the beating heart. Even my calico house cat that generally lives in a very self-involved world, joined the chorus and began to meow repeatedly during this performance. This recalls the legend from the Bible of animals being able to speak on Christmas Eve. In studio and on DVD, IV did raise the Spirit of Christmas and reminded us all this is a sacred event on the Christian calendar.

Piero Barone, Gianluca Ginoble and Ignazio Boschetto are stars on the rise. We have to speculate on where their careers are bound. Piero openly professed his love of opera and desires to one day perform in it. Gianluca is dreadfully homesick and needs to find balance between the demands of a public career and the need for a private life. Ignazio is open to whatever comes finding harmony in his elfin foxy way.
