Garden Still Slumbers

How long the winter.

How strange and wild.
One day blundering through icy winds
Another past thawing ponds
But, the sunset reaches into evening now
Fingers want to feel the soil
Nose misses fragrance of fresh earth
Blueberries rest under burlap blankets
But, doesn’t cardinal sing of hope in the morning
February Snow Moon rises soon

Keep the shovel handy, the garden still slumbers

Return of the Light ~ Blessed Imbolc

The wheel of the year turns. In the northern hemisphere, the Earth makes a return to the Light. In ancient Ireland, February 1 was celebrated as the beginning of the growing season.

In some old world traditions, Halloween was year’s end; Imbolc, the first day of the new year.

Today is Brigit’s Festival. The bright one shines forth.  Brigit is the goddess of hearth and home. She inspires change and growth. She banishes the dark nights.

On February 2, Candelmas is celebrated. This was the day in ancient Greek mythology, when Persephone returned from Hades to rejoin her mother Demeter on earth. The season of darkness ends. The light returns. A good day to banish the dark places in our hearts and welcome in positive energy.  Light a candle to honor the old ways.

Today is also Groundhog Day. Look out the window. Poor weather foretells a gentle spring and a pleasant summer. Snow today means winter won’t lose it’s grip until mid-April.

Full Cold Moon – January 2016

O Stelle! The Full Cold Moon in January arrives tonight. In the northern hemisphere, this is traditionally the month when temperatures plummet. The heavens are particularly active just now with five planets visible in the early morning sky. A rare alignment of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.

As above so below. If there is an increase in certain activities just now, blame it on the stars. Mercury influences communications. Venus provides a spark for love and attraction. Mars is the god of war. Jupiter, is the largest planet in our solar system, governs growth and prosperity. Saturn is the taskmaster of the group and puts a focus on conformity. At this time, Mercury is still retrograde until January 25th. Combine all this with a full moon and the night is full of possibilities.
