An INTJ (Introvert, Intuitive, Thinking, Judging) is one of 16 personality types. The type is determined by taking the Meyers Briggs Type Indicator Instrument (MBTI). The measurement tool is for determining how an individual perceives the world around them and their relationship style.
The assessment is typically administered in college to students in preparation for professional employment. The assessment may also be given at job interviews to determine how the individual would fit into the work environment, or meet the demands of the profession.
Individuals may be curious about their potential and wish to understand their relational style. It’s important to understand how you normally perceive yourself and others in social environments. Our social structures are complex, gaining insight into personal preferences, strengths and weaknesses within interrelations is an intelligent pathway in all areas of life.
INTJ types make up about 2 to 4% of the population. The INTJ female is estimated to be .08% of the population. It’s a rare type to be sure.
INTJ Traits
- Introvert – Preference for calm interactions, self-contained
- Intuitive – Able to perceive behavior patterns and skillfully discern outcomes
- Thinker – Takes in knowledge and ponders the possible outcomes
- Judger – Based upon life experience and knowledge the strongest potential conclusion is drawn
Action, reaction and non-actions are based upon the perception of what someone, or something is doing. INTJ’s practice Insight Dialogue naturally, we pause, relax, open our minds (or not), trust our internal calibrations, listen deeply and speak the truth.
I have tested from time to time as an ISTJ (Introversion, Sensor, Thinking, and Judgement). The test varies on sites with how questions are worded. An expression heard during a Zen dharma talk may offer an explanation on the variation. Every time you meet someone you and they are different. It depends on the day.

INTJ Role Models
My results are more often INTJ, commonly referred to as Mastermind or Scientist. Mr. Spock from Star Trek is an example of a male INTJ. His Vulcan side grounded him in a preference for logic, order and deductive reasoning. His human side helped him reflect on relational interactions and consider ambiguous options to accomplish a task.
A classic female INTJ is Michelle Obama. The character traits she reveals in public are strong, intelligent, independent, leader, direct and fearless.
INTJ women strengths are:
- Self-reliance, a tendency to go it alone, not inclined to follow the crowd. INTJ women interact differently. They have a heightened ability to pause and reflect on words and actions. Reaction time can seem slow or suddenly abrupt. Our finely tuned nonverbal powers have sorted, sifted and determined a best outcome. Sometimes, it’s simply not to get involved.
- Intelligence, interested in a wide variety of topics and on-going learning. The tendency is to read, but to also experience the topic. They learn best by a combination of knowledge and application. You can’t know a thing until you do it.
- Wisdom in trusting themselves to make sound decisions and do what’s best for them.
- Preparedness in day to day life. INTJ’s will have the correct change for a toll, parking meter or postage stamps. An INTJ book club member has read the book for the month and may have watched a film or done further research in preparation for a discussion. It’s a letdown to realize others haven’t and adlib their way through a get together. If this happens too often, the INTJ will not return. It’s not a social club, it’s a book club.
- Spirit in belief in something greater then humanity. What it is may be unknowable. The phrase from Star Wars character Obi-Wan Kenobi to Luke Skywalker in the film A New Hope, often explains the belief system. “The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.”
