Return of the Light ~ Blessed Imbolc

The wheel of the year turns. In the northern hemisphere, the Earth makes a return to the Light. In ancient Ireland, February 1 was celebrated as the beginning of the growing season.

In some old world traditions, Halloween was year’s end; Imbolc, the first day of the new year.

Today is Brigit’s Festival. The bright one shines forth.  Brigit is the goddess of hearth and home. She inspires change and growth. She banishes the dark nights.

On February 2, Candelmas is celebrated. This was the day in ancient Greek mythology, when Persephone returned from Hades to rejoin her mother Demeter on earth. The season of darkness ends. The light returns. A good day to banish the dark places in our hearts and welcome in positive energy.  Light a candle to honor the old ways.

Today is also Groundhog Day. Look out the window. Poor weather foretells a gentle spring and a pleasant summer. Snow today means winter won’t lose it’s grip until mid-April.
